Apple sauce is a staple in any WFPB home, as it is used for baking instead of sugar. You can also use it on your oatmeal, in a smoothie or as your baby’s food. It’s really easy to make, you get to use up those tired, old apples just lying there, and you can freeze it so you’ll always have natural sweetener at hand. Add vanilla or cinnamon for extra taste. I prefer to keep it simple and not add any spices, so that I can use it for both sweet and savory cooking.

We love to use this apple sauce for vegan waffles or super healthy oat banana pancakes.

And of course, this sauce is a staple in one of our most popular recipes – oil free breakfast muffins with nuts and fruit.

Why buy apple sauce for your delicious healthy recipes when you can make it in half an hour? It’s not only easy, it is so much cheaper!

Ingredients for about 2 cups (or a little more):

  • 10 large apples, preferably sweet ones
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Optional: 1 tsp cinnamon or/and 1 tsp vanilla extract

This is how you do it:

Peel the apples and remove the core. Dice them and put them into a casserole together with the water and lemon juice. Let it come to a simmer and cook in medium heat for about 20 minutes or until the apples are moist and easy to mash.

You can choose wether you want to keep the apple sauce chunky by just mashing them lightly with a fork, or do as I do; blend them into a smooth sauce. This will keep for about 1 week in the fridge, or for several months in the freezer. I freeze it in portions (about 1/2 cup in each box/bag) and take out what I need for my recipes then and there. It thaws quickly if you put the sealed box or bag into hot water for 10-15 minutes or so.
